I TOOK A POP QUIZ IN LIFE TODAY ...
By R. Lee Harris
Kansas State University College of Education
Commencement - May 22, 2004

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
Am I really truly ready?
Did I learn all that I will need?
Will I be strong and steady?

I have the tools for my chosen trade
To shape young minds and souls.
But will the passion burn inside me
And glow like white hot coals?

Does my diploma mean I'm actually a teacher?
I'm full of doubts and fear.
Will I be able to handle the job
Is my mission clear?

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
In a classroom that's all mine!
With real live students, desks and chairs
And a blackboard that's so fine.

I'm planning lessons that are for real
I'll make sure learning's fun.
Whether it's reading, writing or 'rithmetic
My work is never done.

I'm full of energy, vim and vigor
I can't wait for the bell to sound.
So I can teach the whole day long
What a fabulous career I've found!

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
I've found my one true love.
We're getting married in the spring
With blessings from above.

The wedding will be so beautiful
I want my students to attend.
To share the joy and laughter
And fling rose petals to the wind.

We'll eat, drink and be merry
As we begin our new life together
Respect and honor will be our creed
Our love will grow forever.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
The years are flying by.
My experience is much broader now
I've learned new things to try.

The classroom is a wondrous place
The students all do well.
And I received an award last month
For teachers who excel.

My mind is focused, my instincts sharp
I'm teaching at my peak.
I go beyond the call of duty
To help kids learn each week.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
It's a baby girl and boy!
We've started our own family
A new day filled with joy!

We'll change diapers two at a time
And never get to rest.
But I wouldn't trade this life of mine
'Cause parenthood is the best.

I now have even more to teach
Besides the normal subjects.
My students need to know some things
Beyond what each expects.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
When I learned about his passing.
My father was a mighty man
Whose love is everlasting.

I feel sorrow, hurt and pain
A new day is hard to start.
But Dad keeps whispering in my ear
That he's always in my heart.

He lived with grace and dignity
The times with him were great.
Though I'll miss him dearly every minute
My students cannot wait.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
I'm really getting tired.
For 25 years I've been teaching
And now I'm uninspired.

I think they call it burnout
Whatever, this is bad.
My class gets on my nerves so much
It really makes me mad.

How can I go on this way
Feeling such displeasure?
Whatever happened to the career
That I used to love and treasure?

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
Something clicked inside my mind.
I realized my mission still is clear
It was always there to find.

A hug from a student brought me back
From misery and despair.
The sun shines brightly on my back
And now the winds are fair.

The lesson plans are now the best
That I have ever made.
The kids in class are making A's
I know they'll pass the grade.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
It's the end of the line for me.
I've taught for 40 years
Now the world I want to see.

Retirement is a little scary
I'm not sure what I will do.
I've taught a thousand kids
And a few of their kids too.

I love to teach and shape young minds
As much as at the first.
For knowledge is a mysterious drink
That never quenches thirst.

I took a pop quiz in life today . . .
How did I do I ask?
Did I make a difference
With every single task?

Did I always do what's right
In every possible way?
Did I fulfill the dream I had
On every single day?

I am pleased to tell you now
While the years went by so fast.
Those pop quizzes I have talked about
Well . . . in the end I passed.
